The Lost Colony has canceled the last remaining performances of the season after a cast member tested positive for COVID-19.

The announcement came on Facebook hours before its annual Virginia Dare baby night performance, a long-held Outer Banks tradition celebrating the birth of the first English child in the New World with live babies portraying Virginia Dare.

“We are saddened that an incredible season has come to an end abruptly however, the safety and health of the company is our top priority,” the Facebook post said.

Ticket holders are asked to contact the box office at 252.473.6000 for a full refund.

For the first time since World War II, the nation’s longest-running outdoor drama was forced to cancel the entire season last year due to the pandemic. The 84th Season of The Lost Colony opened May 28 this year and was expected to run through this Saturday, Aug. 21.

The play opened this year with a new director/choreographer and members of several Native American tribes, including North Carolina’s Lumbee Tribe, debuting in principal as well as supporting and directorial roles.

  1. The time has passed for this show. Like many things altered by COVID it’s time to create something new versus regurgitating the same story over and and over. Surprised it has survived the woke era since it was the beginning of the end of the American Indians control of North America.
