The Secotan Alliance will host “In the Spirit of Wingina… and Beyond” at the Frisco Native American Museum on May 29
The Secotan Alliance is proud to host its first ever annual event: In the Spirit of Wingina… and Beyond. A starter event at Frisco Native American Museum in Frisco, NC will open the 2 ½ days long full event from 4pm-6pm May 29. The next 2 days of the event will take place May 30-31, 2024 at the College of the Albemarle, Dare Campus, located at 205 U.S. 64 in Manteo, NC.
The 2 1/2 days of historical and environmental presentations will be headlined by Michael Leroy Oberg, Ph.D, a historical scholar on Chief Wingina and author of The Head in Edward Nugent’s Hand, Roanoke’s Forgotten Indians. Gabrielle Tayac, Ph.D, Associate Professor in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University will join Dr. Oberg in Frisco. Joining them both on Day 2 & 3 in Manteo, NC will be Arwin Smallwood, Ph.D, Dean of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, NC Central University, as well as Charles Ewen, Ph.D, Harriot College Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at East Carolina University. Indigenous environmental activist and author David Webb will join them on Friday. Tammy Woodward, Director of the Outer Banks History Center, and Gray Michael Parsons, President of The Secotan Alliance, will serve as co-moderators for the event.
Indigenous community tribal leaders from the Chowanoke; Hatterask; and Machapunga tribes will participate in symbolic historical indigenous ceremony along with The Secotan Alliance leaders.
In addition to the speakers, panel discussion members will include representatives from Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center, Peace Garden Project, Sound Rivers, Coastal Carolina Riverwatch, NC Coastal Federation, Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, Hatteras Island Wildlife Rescue, Jockey’s Ridge, Ban Balloon Release and experts on the traditional earth ethic from the indigenous diaspora of Eastern NC. Closing the event will be a flute, storytelling and dance performance by IOSND.
