RODANTHE– Catherine Ann Jones, 54, died Oct. 10, 2012, at Gilchrist Hospice inColumbia, after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by her familyand friends.
She was born Nov. 6, 1957 to William Calvin and Patricia Ann (Glass) Jones Sr.
Shelived her early life in Frederick, moving to Baltimore when she was 7.After she finished junior high school, the family moved to EllicottCity. In her late 20s, she settled in Solomons, where she managed theSt. Mary’s College bookstore and later established her own specialtyboutique, Sugar Magnolia’s. She also developed a love of the sport ofwindsurfing. This hobby eventually prompted her to move to HatterasIsland on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the late 1990s.
Thegreat friendships she formed in southern Maryland continued after shemoved away. She loved living on Hatteras. She became part of aclose-knit community of friends that she considered to be her secondfamily and loved spending time with them, especially during the quieteroff-season on the island. She was a self-professed lover of food andart and a friend to animals of all kinds. She worked a number ofdiverse jobs while on Hatteras. She spent time as a research assistantfor the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, worked at a marinerepair shop and thrift store and was a caretaker of multiple rentalproperties. She also did stints as a waitress, bartender, and censustaker.
She had a passion to help the less fortunate or those inneed. She spent countless hours helping both people and animals in hercommunity. Over the years, she developed shelter for the homelessanimals that lived on the island, providing food and veterinaryservices for them. She was always on the lookout for good homes for theanimals in her care. She took great pride in her community and wasespecially proud of the way they all came together to help one anotherin the arduous cleanup from Hurricane Irene in 2011. She loved herfamily, especially her nieces and nephews.
She is survived byher parents, William and Patricia Jones of Ellicott City; brothers,William Jones and his wife, Susanne Ogaitis-Jones, of Catonsville, Md.,and Christopher Jones and his wife, Julie Oaks Jones, of Columbia, Md.;and nieces and nephews, William and Adele Jones, Kyle, Kate, and EvanJones.
Family received friends Oct. 15 at Slack Funeral Home in Ellicott City.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Interment was private.
