MANTEO– Walter Thomas Ballance, 75, surrounded by family and loved ones,went to be with the Lord Saturday, on Sept. 27, 2014. “Tommy” was bornin Hatteras but lived most of his life in Wanchese. He was the son ofthe late Walter and Juanita Tillett Ballance. He retired as supervisorof the Dare County Building and Grounds Department and attended ManteoFirst Assembly. He was a lifelong carpenter, loving husband, andamazing father. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death bya daughter, Natalie Cologgi; a sister, Anna Utley; and a brother, WayneBallance.
Mr. Ballance is survived by his wife, Betty GallopBallance of the residence; two daughters, Anna Jean Benitez andhusband, Scott, of Winterville and Mary Esther Doxey and husband, Jeff,of Wanchese; two sons, Christopher T. Ballance and William P. Byrd andwife, Rhea Anne, all of Wanchese; a sister, Jean Daniels of Wanchese; abrother, Larry Ballance of Wanchese; three step-children, CorinneEtheridge of Stumpy Point, Lauris Etheridge and wife, Delia, ofWanchese, and Todd Etheridge of the residence; 15 grandchildren,two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Afuneral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct., 1, at 2 p.m. at ManteoFirst Assembly by the Rev. Elmo Daniels and Pastor Steve Smith with areception to follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Burial willbe in Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relativesat Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and atother times at the residence.
