Sarah Alford Owens passed awaypeacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015. She was born in Manteo onFebruary 19, 1937. Sarah is survived by her husband, Bobby Owens;her son, RV Owens III and wife, Julie; grandchildren, Shannon Owens, BoOwens, Chase Hooper and Avery Hooper; son-in-law, Buddy Hooper;sisters, Dotty Fry, Sally Scarborough and husband, Phil, and DellaBasnight; brothers, Saint Basnight Jr. and wife, Bea, and MarcBasnight; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Shannon, and husband, Lionel;nieces, Caroline Basnight, Vicki Basnight, Peaches Eckhardt, ClaudiaHarrington, Kathy Urich, and Sarah Wise; nephews, EddieAlford, Hannon Fry, and Fields Scarborough; as well as many othercherished nieces, nephews, and family.
Sarah was preceded in death byher daughter, Lisa Owens Hooper; her brother, E J Alford; hersister-in-law, Sandy Basnight; and her parents, Cora Mae Basnight andEdwin Joseph Alford.
Sarah truly loved Dare County.She worked beside Aycock Brown in the early years to promote The OuterBanks and continued to greet hundreds of locals and tourists with herready smile at Owens Restaurant. Sarah loved her hometown ofManteo and spent many hours driving its beautiful streets. Shehad a lifelong love of The Lost Colony and Dare County history. Dare County has lost one of its greatest historians with the passing ofSarah Owens.
A service will be held at MountOlivet United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 11a.m. Burial will follow at Manteo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,memorial donations may be made to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, PO Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943.
