Amemorial service for Julie Ann Riley Schauer is planned for Saturday,Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Church in Buxton.The family will host a coffee reception after the service in the churchsocial hall.
JulieAnn Riley Schauer, known as “Tutu” to her grandchildren, passed awaypeacefully at home in Wilmington, N.C., on the morning of Jan. 26,2015, four days shy of her 77th birthday.
Juliewas born on Jan. 30, 1938 in Melbourne, Australia, and grew up on navalbases, moving to the United States when she was 8 years old. Shegraduated from Punahou High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, “the same highschool as Obama, but not the same year,” as she liked to pointout. After moving to Norfolk, Va., Julie graduated from MaryWashington College before undertaking graduate studies at CatholicUniversity in Washington, D.C., and went into social work.
Juliemarried Richard “Bubba” Schauer, who preceded her in death. Theyhad two daughters, Laura and Lisa Schauer, and moved to West Virginiato work on biodynamic organic farming for 14 years. The familyoften vacationed in Cape Hatteras and moved there to open Bubba’s BBQ,which they operated for 15 years. Julie spent 30 years in CapeHatteras where she continued organic farming and was heavily involvedin the founding of Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Church, where she metmany lifelong friends. Julie spent her winters in Wilmington,where she moved permanently two years ago to be closer to family.
Julieled a very active and adventurous life. She was a certified scubadiver and loved swimming in the ocean with dolphins. She was anavid traveler. Among other destinations, Julie visited family in,and traveled across, Australia, explored Machu Picchu in Peru, met RuthChris founder Ruth Fertel in New Orleans, visited Jamaica and theGalapagos Islands and vacationed in Cozumel almost annually.
Inaddition to traveling, Julie loved food, gardening (she had an affinityfor orchids) and wasn’t afraid to admit she liked watching TV.
Julieleaves behind her brother, Philip Riley of Atlanta, Ga.; her daughter,Laura, and son-in-law Craig, their daughters Tristen and Torrie, andher other daughter, Lisa, and her son Arthur. Julie wasanticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild, Sebastian.
Thefamily will celebrate Julie’s life with family and friends at home onSaturday, Jan. 31. A memorial service is being planned for lateFebruary in Cape Hatteras as well.
