HATTERAS — Edith MaeEvans began her life in Ocean City, Md. She spent summers with hergrandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins in Buxton until the familymoved here when Edith was in high school.
Not long after she graduated high school, she met her future husbandNelson Myron “Clam” Stowe. Edith said Clam was so good looking and somuch fun she married him after six months of courtship. They settled inHatteras village where they paid $15 a month rent for their first house– without running water. Clam Stowe passed away in November of 1976.
Clam and Edith have three children, Beverly Jean Stowe of New YorkCity, Spurgeon Evans Stowe and his wife, Katherine, of Hatteras,and Wendy Mae Sisler, also of Hatteras. All of her children were at herbedside when she passed on Monday after a fall.
Edith has three siblings. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Grooms,and husband, Joe, and her brother, Merle Evans, and girlfriend, Marion,and is predeceased by her brother, Harold Evans.
Edith’s second husband was Donald Oden. They shared a wonderfulfriendship and too short a time together. She had close relationshipswith her stepchildren and their spouses — Mitzi and Chris Kellum,Donny and Evon Oden, Danny and Jane Oden, and Mark and Ella Oden.
Edith’s grandchildren, Misty Powell, Harley Sisler, Brook Stowe andwife, Casey, Cory Sisler, Nelson Stowe, Jake Stowe, and Patsy Mae Stoweheld a special place in her heart. She also recently met her firstgreat-grandchild, Addie Mae Stowe. They will all miss their Grams.
Edith remained close to nieces and nephews including Craig Smith, Terryand Greg Deloach, Debbie Evans Wiseman, Kim and Robert Kelly, Jeff andAnn Evans, Clicky and Susie Austin, Michael and Beth Austin, Ursula andPaul Ramey, Sonny and Vicki Stowe, Pam Karden, Dawn and Danny Fenyak,and Cliff and Leigh Austin.
Edith lived life to the fullest. Family and friends loved her Sundaydinners where she cooked everyone’s favorites. She enjoyed art,dancing, and traveling but loved coming back to her home in Hatterasmost of all.
Services will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. onFriday, May 6, with a reception to follow at the home of Spurgeon andKatherine Stowe, 57167 Kohler Drive, Hatteras. All are welcome.
