HATTERAS — Wilmer Bassett Poteate,87, died on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016 at his home. Born in Norfolk, Va.,he was the son of the late Samuel Blair Poteate and Violet AceyPoteate. Wilmer was a Virginia Tech University graduate having spenthis career as an engineer in the aerospace industry. He was a member ofthe Kiwanis Club of the Virginia Beach-Combers and Hatteras UnitedMethodist Church.
Wilmer is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Burrus Poteate; a daughter,Terri Lynn Poteet of Hatteras; three sons, Wilmer Bassett Poteate Jr.of Texas, Clayton Dudley Poteate of Virginia, and Andrew Gray Poteateof New Hampshire; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; anephew, Blair; and a niece, Anne. Along with his parents, Wilmer waspreceded in death by a daughter, Susan Dale Philip-Poteate, and abrother, Samuel Blair Poteate Jr.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at HatterasUnited Methodist Church with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. The familyinvites friends and relatives for a reception immediately following theservice at the Hatteras Community Building. Burial will take place atthe Gray family cemetery in Buxton.
