KITTY HAWK — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, grandad, great-grandad, and the founder of the $0.99 breakfast on the Outer Banks

Alvin Chester VanCuren of Kitty Hawk, NC, died peacefully on March 11, 2024. A native of Olean, New York, Al joined the US Navy at a young age and was stationed on the USS Mississippi in Portsmouth, VA, where he met his wife Faye.

His accomplishments in the hospitality business are numerous. Starting in the 1970s with the Ebb Tide Motel and Restaurant, Steak and Egger now Millers, The Dunes Restaurant, The Sportsman’s Restaurant now Jimmy’s Buffet, The Ships Wheel Restaurant formerly Spencer’s Restaurant on the causeway and beach road in Kill Devil Hills and finally Jarvisburg Junction in Jarvisburg, NC.

Al was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Faye, and a grandson Michael David VanCuren, Jr.

He is survived by three sons: Michael D. VanCuren and his wife, Madonna, of Kitty Hawk, NC; Dennis W. VanCuren and his wife, Anne, of Maryville, TN; and B. Keith VanCuren of Greenville, NC; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Those who knew him will remember him as a generous but firm man, not to mention tough as nails.

His favorite charity was St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a donation in his honor is welcomed and encouraged.
