November 26, 1955 – January 21, 2025
MANTEO — Angela Rose Hecke, 69, of Manteo, passed away on January 21, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Born on November 26, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Sharon Lee Javorsky and Nicholas Chris Hatzis but was raised by Arthur W. Kingery. She graduated from Herscher High School in 1973. The following year, she married Robert Charles Carraher, and in 1976, they welcomed their daughter, Amy. In her early adulthood, she worked various jobs, such as a wine rep, taxi driver, and vacuum cleaner salesperson. She later turned to media and began working at Commercial Printing, working for Donald Hecke, whom she would marry in 1989. With this union, Angela gained another daughter, Lydia.
Angela and Don owned and operated WKRV radio station in Vandalia, Illinois and the Springfield Shopper in Springfield, Illinois. They sold and retired to Manteo in 2001.
In Manteo, she and Don enjoyed the slower and more relaxed environment, making several dear friends around town. Angela loved the ocean, antiquing, flowers, and elephants. She also loved music, and in 2002, she produced an album of songs she had written and composed entitled “now and then we create our own.” That was something that she was very proud of. She was a former member of the Dare County Blade Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, and her fur babies: Rudy, Rosa, Bella, and Sadie.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Ortiz of Manteo, stepdaughter Lydia Hinds (Tom) of Burnt Hills, New York, her grandchildren: PFC Arturo Lara, Osan AB, South Korea, Antonio Lara (Peyton) and Angel Martinez all of Manteo, her uncle James George of Elma, Washington, several cousins, and her dearest friend, Susan Tounas of Manteno, Illinois.
A celebration of life will be held on June 14, 2025, as Angela absolutely loved that time of year.
