Smithfield, VA — Archie Douglas Burrus, a beloved member of the community and native of Dare County, NC, passed away on October 12, 2023, in Smithfield, VA. Born on July 21, 1951, Archie lived a fulfilling life that spanned 72 years.
After graduating from Hargrave Military Academy, Archie dedicated his time to working in the family business, The Sea Oatel and Dareolina Restaurant.
Archie had a range of interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He cherished dining out, embarking on long rides in his Cadillacs, and engaging in lively discussions about politics and various sports. He was an avid collector of cookbooks and enjoyed reading recipes. As a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Archie found solace and strength in his spiritual beliefs.
Archie will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Lina Oden Burrus and Archie Burrus. Left to cherish his memory are his dear friend, Curtis Parker, and family as well as his neighbors and business associates.
A graveside funeral service to honor Archie’s life will take place at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 22, 2023, in Manteo Cemetery, with Rev. Marc O’Neal officiating. This solemn gathering will provide an opportunity for family and friends to gather, sharing stories, memories, and finding solace in one another’s support.
Archie’s journey took him from Dare County, NC to Chesapeake, VA, then Williamsburg, VA and finally Smithfield, VA. His presence in these communities will be deeply missed, as he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and warmth that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
