KILL DEVIL HILLS — Barbara Estelle Rust of Kill Devil Hills, NC, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on February 13, 2025. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Born on October 19, 1934, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, she was the cherished daughter of the late Sue Simcoe Phillips and Howard Shipley Phillips.
Barbara dedicated many years of her life working in food service at Westinghouse in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. In 2005, she embraced retirement and moved to the serene Outer Banks, where she found joy as a member of the kitchen staff at First Flight Elementary School.
Her passions were diverse and vibrant; she delighted in cooking, nurturing her garden, playing bingo, hunting for treasures at yard sales, and cherishing moments with friends and family. Barbara was also a devoted member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, where she found community and faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Rust; her daughter-in-law, Gretchen Rust; and her sister-in-law, Alice Phillips.
Barbara’s legacy lives on through her loving family: her daughter, Linda Hoy of Kitty Hawk, NC; her sons, Leonard (Theresa) Rust of New Kensington, PA, and Lawrence (Karen) Rust of Kitty Hawk, NC; her grandchildren, Leah (Scott) Missildine of AL, Tonya (Brandon) Berry of Baker, FL, Amanda (Jason) Makara of Lower Burrell, PA, Leonard Rust of Arnold, PA, Lawrence (Hannah) Rust of Broken Arrow, OK, and Jennifer Rust of Charlotte, NC; her great-grandchildren, Olivia Berry and Dominic Berry of Baker, FL, Annalise Rust of Lower Burrell, PA, Madyson, Lilly, and Maximus Makara of Lower Burrell, PA; her sister, Nancy Ford of Monongahela, PA; her brother, Robert Phillips of Monroeville, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jeff Sockwell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Barbara may be made to Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, Outer Banks SPCA, or the Dementia Society.
Barbara will be remembered for her warm heart, her dedication to her family, and the joy she brought to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
