SOUTHERN SHORES — Calvin Lary Sawyer was born on July 21, 1941, in Portsmouth, VA. He peacefully passed away on October 19, 2023, in Southern Shores, NC. Lary lived a fulfilling life spanning 82 years.
Lary’s journey through life was filled with remarkable accomplishments and meaningful experiences. As a young man, he showcased his musical talents as a member of the Elizabeth City High School Marching Band. Following graduation, he attended UNC–Chapel Hill and later served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard.
After his military service, Lary embarked on a successful career at IBM, where he worked as a dedicated hardware and software technician until his well-deserved retirement. Lary’s commitment to his work was unwavering, and he made a lasting impact on those he encountered throughout his professional journey.
When it came to matters of faith, Lary found solace and community at Duck Church, where he attended.
In his personal life, Lary was blessed with the love and companionship of his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce Glenn Harris Sawyer. Together, they created a beautiful family that brought him immense joy and pride. Lary leaves behind his daughters, Jan Jones (Brandon) and Jill Stowe, and his son, Eric Sawyer (Lauryn). He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Brock Jones, Skylar Stowe, and Tanner Stowe, who were the apples of his eye. Lary’s memory will forever hold a special place in the hearts of his surviving cousins and friends.
Lary was preceded in death by his parents, CL and Dot Sawyer.

In honoring Lary’s life, a memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Duck Church. It is during this gathering that we will come together to remember Lary, celebrate his life, and find solace in the memories we shared with him. Following the service, the family invites all to join them for a reception at Duck Woods Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made the charity of one’s choice.
Lary will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace, forever remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and cherished friend.
