April 9, 1951 – April 10, 2024
MANTEO — Charles “Chuck” Tomkinson III, age 73, of Manteo, NC, passed away on April 10, 2024. He was born on April 9, 1951, in Richmond, VA.
Chuck led a fulfilling life centered around his passion for working with his hands and helping others in any way he could. He graduated from Midlothian High School and went on to earn a degree in Art from Virginia Commonwealth University. Chuck’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to run his own construction company on the Outer Banks until a diagnosis interrupted his plans in 2003. After a period of remission, he joined Renaissance Construction, where he dedicated many years before retiring in 2016. Even in retirement, he continued to share his skills as a dedicated handyman.
In addition to his love for fishing, gardening, and carpentry, Chuck was a devoted member of the Wanchese Lions Club for many years. His commitment to service and community was evident in the countless hours he volunteered, embodying the club’s mission of serving others.
His warm personality made it easy for him to connect with people, turning strangers into friends in no time. But above all, Chuck cherished the time spent with his beloved grandchildren – Calleigh, Gabe, and Les.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Denise Walton Tomkinson; his daughter, Katie Stewart of Manteo, NC; his son, Ben Stewart, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany of Chesapeake, VA; his grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia Tomkinson Chappel and husband Tom of North Chesterfield, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Werner Tomkinson and Charles Tomkinson, Jr.
Chuck’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, hard work, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A service to celebrate Chuck’s life is pending.
