February 9, 1970 – August 20, 2021
Charles Dwight Burrus, 51, was born in Mobile, Alabama on February 9, 1970 to Dwight Burrus of Hatteras, North Carolina and Cheryl Miller Burrus, now Cheryl Benson, of Fairhope, Alabama.
Charlie came into the world as a loving and affectionate child. He dearly loved his mother’s family in Alabama and his father’s family in North Carolina and Virginia. Besides his parents, he leaves behind his spouse, Sander Schlichter of Philadelphia, his stepmother Debbie Burrus, his stepsister, Jessica Felice of Buena Vista, Virginia and a brother, Bryan Wood (Alicia) of Fairhope, Alabama. Charlie loved all of his aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and his cousins who are numerous.
Charlie graduated from Fairhope High School and East Carolina University as a Registered Nurse and became a traveling nurse working in Raleigh, N.C. and Wilmington, Delaware where he was a favorite of the children on the cancer ward. He then settled in Philadelphia for the last 20 years working in several hospitals there. He was also an accomplished artist whose paintings sold here and abroad. He was vibrant, joyous, smart, funny and caring and a generous friend.
Charlie made friends easily wherever he went. He had many dear friends in Philadelphia and special friends were Anita and her daughter Katy whom he loved like a sister and in fact, was planning a trip soon to Oregon to visit her and her husband to finally see the restaurant Coquine that they opened in 2010.
Charlie died in the hospital in Raleigh, N.C. as a result of an automobile accident on August 20, 2021. A graveside service is planned for the family and special friends in Hatteras on Saturday, September 18th.
Dwight & Debbie would like to extend a welcome to any visitors at their residence in Hatteras, N.C.
