October 22, 1955 – June 9, 2023
KITTY HAWK — Clarence Albert “Dusty” Rhoads Ill passed away peacefully at his home in Kitty Hawk on June 9, 2023. Dusty was born on October 22, 1955, to Mary Louise “Skippy” Rhoads and Clarence Albert “Dusty” Rhoads, Jr. in Tampa, FL.
After graduating from Manteo High School, Dusty enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was appointed and served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic (S) Third Class, until he was honorably discharged; Dusty continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 2000.
After returning to his family’s homestead in Kitty Hawk, Dusty incorporated Dusty Rhoads HVAC in 1996, and he became a familiar name and face to residents and visitors of the Outer Banks over the past 27 years. Dusty cared deeply for his family and the town of Kitty Hawk. He served on the Kitty Hawk Planning Board, after having served on the Recreation Committee. Preserving old-time Kitty Hawk was a passionate cause for Dusty. He was instrumental in the realization of Heritage Day, serving as co-chair of the Kitty Hawk Folklife Heritage Waterman Committee. Dusty was the first person to ever be inducted as an Honorary Kitty Hawk Town Council member.
Dusty’s sense of humor was appreciated by anyone who had one of their own. He was loyal, never met a stranger, and would give his last dime if it would help out someone in need. He trusted his friends and loved his family. Always happy on the water, Dusty was an avid angler, loving the challenge, especially, of catching dolphinfish and cobia. He cherished the friendships that he made with longtime companions in the Ridge Anglers.
Dusty is survived by his wife Amy KeyserRhoads; his children: Brandi (wife Jennifer), Acacia, Nia, Danielle, Isabella, and James; his grandchildren Brooklyn and Skylar; his sisters: Cynthia Meeke, Lucetta Lea, and Dorothy Cheshire; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Dustyn Rhoads; his parents; and his sisters Rosalyn Maggio and Mary Louise Vitucci.
In lieu of flowers to the family, please consider a donation in Dusty’s name to the Outer Banks SPCA.
