COLINGTON — Crawford M. Evans, Jr., 86, of Colington died peacefully at the family home on August 14, 2023. Born August 9, 1937 in Woodleaf, North Carolina, Crawford was the son of the late Crawford M. Evans and the late Mildren Russell Evans. He was predeceased by his daughter, April Louise Evans, and by his brother, Doyle Evans.
Through the seventies, eighties and the nineties, he owned and operated a successful beach variety store known as Skipper’s located across from Avalon Pier. After retirement, he developed his passion for woodworking into creating fine works of art which he displayed and sold at several local art and music festivals throughout the Outer Banks. He participated as a vendor in The Outer Banks Seafood Festival since its inception, Coastal Gardening Festival, The New World Festival of Arts in Manteo, Dare Day, Currituck Arts & Crafts Festival and others.
Besides being a businessman and woodworking artist, Crawford was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and boating, sharing those times with his friends and family. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Evans of the Colington Harbor residence; his son, Crawford Monroe “Chip” Evans, III (Megan) of Ocracoke, NC; his two brothers, Richard Evans of Stanfield, NC, and Ronnie Evans (Cathy) of Rock Hill, SC; one sister, Millie Smith (Ronnie) of Fort Lawn, SC; and a host of other family members, in-laws, extended family members, and long-time friends.
The Evans family is honoring Crawford’s directives for cremation. As he preferred, there are no plans for services at this time. The family is respectfully requesting privacy.
