NORFOLK, VA — Cyrus Gerald Gray, aged 84, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at his home in Norfolk, Virginia. Born on March 19, 1940, in Rodanthe, North Carolina, he lived a life dedicated to his family and service.
Cyrus was the grandson of the notable Capt. John Allen Midgett Jr. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, he joined the United States Coast Guard, proudly serving his country and embodying a spirit of duty and honor. Succeeding his military service, he enjoyed a successful career in auto sales where his dedication and integrity earned him the trust and respect of many.
An enthusiastic lover of the water, Cyrus felt most at home near the sea. He was an excellent fisherman. As a small child on Rodanthe, his father and older brothers taught him to fish. His passion for water sports, motorcycle riding, and flying reflected his adventurous spirit. He fulfilled a lifelong dream by obtaining his pilot’s license, often taking to the skies for pleasure.
A Methodist, Cyrus found strength in his spiritual beliefs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bethany Midgett Gray and Julian Lewark Gray; three brothers, Norman, Wiley, and Allen Gray; and two sisters, Norma Cahoon and Sheila Eakins.
Cyrus is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Gray, who stood by his side for many cherished years. His stepdaughter, Danielle of Kill Devil Hills, moved back to the area to assist in his care for many years. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who enjoyed his laughter and big smile.
At Cy’s request, a private family funeral service with military honors will be held to celebrate his life at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, North Carolina.
