MANTEO — Elizabeth Ann Etheridge Wescott, a lifelong resident of Manteo, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on February 6, 1936, Elizabeth spent her entire life in the community she cherished, shaping its fabric with her entrepreneurial spirit and warm heart.
A graduate of Manteo High School, Elizabeth was a dedicated businesswoman, owning and operating several beloved local businesses including the Ocean Side Tourist Court, Sea Shore Shops, and Sea Isle Gifts.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Elizabeth was a devoted wife and mother. She found joy in crocheting, needlepoint, reading, and cooking. Her home was always filled with the warmth of love.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred M. Wescott; her daughter, Connie Anita Wescott; her parents, Vera Mann Gray Etheridge and John Burgess Etheridge; and two brothers, John Burgess Etheridge and Robert Curtis Etheridge.
She leaves behind a family that will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Cathy Overton and husband Tommy of Nags Head; sons Fred Wescott, Jr and wife Ellen of Manteo, James Wescott and wife Palmer of Manteo, and Edward Wescott of Winterville. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Fred Wescott III of Wilmington, Jeffrey Wescott of Kitty Hawk, Holly Overton of Brooklyn, NY, Heather Overton of Flagstaff, AZ, Andrew Hines of Winston Salem, and Victoria Raynor of Winterville, as well as her great-grandchildren, Sydney Smith, Bailey Hines, Levon Wescott, Jedd Wescott, Nicholas Sutton, and Isabella Sutton. Elizabeth is also survived by her brother, William David Etheridge, and many loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service to celebrate Elizabeth’s life will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Manteo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry, reflecting Elizabeth’s lifelong commitment to giving back to her community.
Elizabeth Ann Etheridge Wescott will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and in the town of Manteo that she so deeply loved.
