On the evening of December 1, 2023, the peace of eternal life was granted to Fred after enduring a long battle with the complications of lymphedema. He was 73 years old.
Born July 8, 1950, in the small town of Duluth, Minnesota, Fred was the third child born to Rodney and Lois Westlund. A very close family, the Westlund’s lived in close proximity to their extended family and spent many happy days at their grandparents’ cabin on Little Grand Lake – the place where Fred’s deep love of nature began. He found great enjoyment in camping, fishing, and hunting with his brothers.
When deciding on a career, Fred chose to become an amphibian seaplane pilot. This career took him to Alaska where he worked as a bush pilot for 23 years. Upon his retirement, Fred settled on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to be close to his sister. During those years, he spent his time collecting and restoring antique gold scales to working order and pristine condition. He enjoyed collecting antiques and fascinating objects from the natural world. Ever the meticulous craftsman, he also took great pleasure in working with wood.
Fred is preceded in death by his father and mother, his younger brother Timothy Westlund, and his son Dereck Westlund. He is survived by his brothers Curtis P. Westlund and Ted Westlund, and his sister Susan W. Patchel. He also leaves behind two nephews, one niece, and many cousins.
The family will be scattering Fred’s ashes by air and at sea in honor of his great love of nature. There are no plans for services at this time. Please express condolences to the family via the online register at gallopfuneralservices.com.
