WANCHESE — Humphrey Hardy Gillam Jr. (“Hardy”), age 69, of Wanchese, NC, passed away on August 5, 2024, at ECU Health Center in Greenville, NC. Born on April 28, 1955, in Windsor, NC, Hardy devoted his life to both his family and his passions.
Hardy began his working life at the family business, Gillam Brothers Peanuts in Windsor, NC. He then dedicated his professional life to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles License & Theft Bureau, where he served with distinction and passion for 32 years. Beyond his career, he was a respected instructor who shared his expertise through Concealed Carry Handgun classes in Edenton, NC.
An adventurer at heart, Hardy found joy in exploring the local National Wildlife Refuge, fishing, shooting, camping, and beach driving. He was a true shot master and took pride in his extensive collection of knives and guns. His love for animals was evident in the way he cherished his dogs, cats, and ducks. Hardy also dedicated time to guiding young scouts as a scout leader, leaving a lasting impact on many.
Hardy is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Virginia Puryear Gillam; his loving daughter, Kathryn Gillam; and his son, Noah Gillam, along with Noah’s wife, Shannon. Hardy’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever remember his adventurous spirit, dedication, and love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene H. Hodges and Humphrey H. Gillam.
A celebration of Hardy’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior. Visit TwifordFH.com to livestream the service.
