James Cornelius Wesley Tawes, III, known to most as “Jimmy,” passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in Venice Beach, Florida, at the age of 78.
Jimmy was predeceased by his first wife, Pamela Wharton Tawes, and his parents, James Cornelius Wesley Tawes, Jr. and Edna Knight Tawes. He is survived by his second wife, Mary Tawes, his brother, Gregory Tawes (Kathy), and his sons, Kent Tawes (Amy), Andrew Tawes (Kathy), Neil Tawes (Angela), and David Tawes (Tricia). He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
A native of Crisfield, Maryland, Jimmy cherished the Chesapeake Bay and the simple joy of life by the water. After spending many years on Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, he briefly returned to Crisfield before settling in Florida, where he lived out his final years, never far from the Gulf waters he loved.
A lifelong learner and avid reader, Jimmy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, and pursued graduate courses in real estate development. His passion for entrepreneurship led him to become a general contractor and real estate developer. He also played a key role in several successful ventures, including Builders Mart in Crisfield, MD, and Cape Woods Camp Ground in Buxton, NC. Additionally, he worked in banking and development, contributing to the growth of neighborhoods and businesses in Crisfield. Later in life, Jimmy became a real estate agent and enjoyed making jewelry.
Jimmy’s love for the water was matched by his love for travel, gardening, and cooking. Known for his sharp wit and insatiable curiosity, his wisdom and humor live on in the hearts of his sons and their families.
