HATTERAS — Jeremy Eugene Mayo, born January 22, 1976, in Hyannis, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home in Hatteras on Monday, December 11, 2023, at the age of 47, surrounded by those who loved him.
He is survived by his faithful, loving mama, Rosa-Alice Mayo; his brother C. Gene Mayo, IV; nephew Austin Mayo and family, niece Mikala Smith and family; his Aunt Peggy Gray; Uncle Cliff Hodge and family; Aunt Analee (Tom) and family; uncle D.M. (Kristin) and family; Uncle Bruce (Dawn) and family; Uncle Maurice (Joyce) and family.
Jeremy was preceded in death by his father Claffee E. (Gene) Mayo, III; his maternal grandparents, Damon M. Gray, Jr. and Alice Austin Gray; his paternal grandparents Claffee E. Mayo, Jr. and Priscilla Chase Mayo; his Uncle (Mustache) Larry Gray; his Aunt Debbie Hodge; and many other relatives.
Jeremy loved Mr. Rogers, The Price is Right, Golden Girls, Tom & Jerry, Family Feud, and animal shows. His constant companion “Mr. Green Man”, a puppet, has seen him through many things.
His favorite time of year was Christmas. Oh, how he loved Santa! Fire Chief Dave Kelmer started the tradition of bringing Santa to Jeremy on the firetruck. Oh, that beautiful smile that would light up his face when he got that hug from Santa. Not only did Santa shake his hand, but so did all of his helpers: the members of Station #40, Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department. The joy they brought him meant the world to him. His family will hold that memory in their hearts forever.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Hodges and the staff at Avon Medical Center for the impeccable care Jeremy received as well as the support they provided to the family.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, December 15, at 2pm at Hatteras United Methodist Church. A reception with light refreshments will be held in the fellowship hall on site directly after the service. Family who wishes to be part of the procession should gather in the fellowship hall by 1:45pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department.
