SOUTHERN SHORES –Heaven got even better since the arrival of Joseph James Wiegel Friday, January 24, 2020 from Kill Devil Hills, NC. “Joe” as most knew him, graced this earth for 96 years. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph B. and Alma H. Wiegel of Magnolia, Minnesota.
Joe graduated from Magnolia High School. He promptly enlisted in the United States Navy where his intelligence and quiet leadership led him to study aviation. Joe quickly rose to pilot status, flying in World War II for five years. Following his distinguished military service, Joe enrolled in the University of Minnesota and graduated Cum Laude in 1951. While excelling in college, he managed to meet the young, Helen Kilts. The two wed in December of 1951- the beginning of a marriage that would span almost 70 years.
Joe and Helen headed east where Joe was employed with the Department of the Navy as a physicist for 25 years. After retiring from the Navy, he so faithfully served; Joe began yet another career with RM Vrendenberg Company. After his second “retirement” Joe and Helen moved together to Kitty Hawk, NC to enjoy quiet beach time. That didn’t last long though. Almost immediately, Joe felt a familiar urge to continue serving others.
So, Joe and Helen joined Duck Woods Country Club. They sat on several committees and led work on countless special club projects. Joe was also an active member of Duck United Methodist Church and was a faithful member of the First Flight Lions Club. Well into his eighties and nineties, Joe was working bingo, fixing the clubhouse, participating in meetings, volunteering in fishing tournaments, and serving on committees to better the lives of the visually impaired.
Joe always had a smile, a joke, or a friendly word to share with anyone. He was a perfect gentleman, a dedicated scholar and most importantly- a regular guy who would befriend anyone and couldn’t resist a chance to help out a worthy effort.
Joe Wiegel is survived by his life-long love, Helen Kilts Wiegel of the residence and several cherished nieces and nephews living all over the country.
Helen has planned Joe’s memorial service for Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11 am at their family church – Duck United Methodist. Pastor Chris Aydlett will officiate. The family has kindly requested that friends consider Dare Home Health and Hospice for memorial donations in Joe’s honor.
