WANCHESE — Louis Michael Knoerzer, Jr., of Wanchese, NC, lovingly known as Mike, departed from this world on December 26, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born on May 31, 1949, in Cornwall, NY, and peacefully passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA
Mike’s remarkable life journey encompassed a variety of experiences and passions. As a Vietnam Veteran, he proudly served his country, leaving an indelible mark on the United States Navy. During his time in the service, Mike excelled as a skilled Helmsman aboard the revered USS DSSC King.
Following his military service, Mike embarked on a different kind of adventure as the owner of Lou M. Knoerzer Painting. Through his business, he showcased his meticulous craftsmanship and artistic talent, leaving countless homes adorned with his impeccable touch.
Outside of work, Mike found solace and joy in various hobbies. Nature called to him, and he eagerly answered its invitation through hunting and fishing expeditions. He also possessed a green thumb, finding immense fulfillment in landscaping and gardening, creating vibrant and tranquil spaces for himself and others to enjoy. Known for his simple and friendly nature, Mike fostered connections with those around him effortlessly.
Mike shared a special bond with his surviving family and friends. His daughter, Laura Knoerzer, held a cherished place in his heart, and his sister, Debra DeFelice, and her husband Marc of Kitty Hawk, provided unwavering support and love throughout his life. Additionally, Bud Gallop, a dear friend, became an integral part of Mike’s journey, sharing countless memories and laughter together.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Dolores Gayton Knoerzer and Louis M. Knoerzer, as well as his two brothers, Peter and Robert Knoerzer.
Though we mourn his loss, let us remember Mike’s remarkable spirit and the legacy he leaves behind. His kindness, dedication, and passion for life will forever be etched in our hearts. May his soul find eternal peace as we cherish the memories we shared with him.
A service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held in the future, with details to be announced.
