MANTEO — Margaret D. “Peggy” Davenport, 90, of Manteo, NC went to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 14, 2023. A native of Uhrichsville, OH, and a longtime resident of North Carolina, she was the widow of her husband of 53 years, Rev. James H. Davenport. She was born the daughter of the late Dennis and Isabell Dodds on April 11, 1933.
A graduate of Uhrichsville High School, Chowan College, and Elizabeth City State University, Peggy was an elementary and preschool teacher for many years.
Peggy, a member of Manteo Baptist Church, worked faithfully alongside and in support of her husband through many pastorates in Virginia and North Carolina and was active in her church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She also volunteered at The Outer Banks Hospital for 18 years.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Linda D. Jones and husband Ron of Mechanicsville, VA; and stepson, Don L. Davenport and wife Marcia of New Braunfels, TX. She also has five grandchildren: James D. Davenport (Diana) of Corpus Christi, TX, Stephen C. Jones (Laina) of Virginia Beach, VA, Patrick R. Jones (Katie) of Conway, SC, Andrea J. Richardson (Jason) of Charleston, SC, and Julie D. Stephens (Mark) of Nacogdoches, TX. Also surviving are twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three nieces, Pat Benedum of Mayfield Heights, OH, Barbara McPherson of Strasburg, OH, and Rebecca Page of Gnadenhutten, OH; nephew, Bill Dodds of Tucson, AZ; and her very special local friends, Melva Draper, Lynne Martin, Nell Long, Gail Via, and DeBorah Gibbs.
In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by her son, Michael D. Davenport of Sissonville, WV; one brother, John W. Dodds of OH; three sisters, Mary D. Visintainer and Doris D. Reidenbaugh of OH, and Elizabeth D. Haugh of FL.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Manteo Baptist Church, with Rev. Greg Clark and Rev. Ken Simpson officiating. A viewing will begin at 10:30 am. Following the service, a graveside committal will take place at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, Peggy requested memorial donations be made to Manteo Baptist Church (PO Box 670, Manteo, NC 27954).
