AVON — On Friday, September 25, 2020, Hatteras Island lost a dear friend and community member, a devoted father, loving husband, and caring grandfather. Peter Groom was a proud American and veteran. As the tides rise and fall, so do our emotions as we remember all of the wonderful things we love about Pete. He will be deeply missed but will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
Pete was born and raised in Troy, NY. While raising his son, John, he fell in love with the Outer Banks. He would throw sailing gear and John in the car and drive the 10 hours overnight to reach the long stretch of sand and wind. He and his wife Donna have now made Avon their home for the past 21 years.
Pete is survived by his wife, Donna; his sons, John and wife Jessica, and Jeremiah; his stepchildren, Susanne, Ned and Myrah, Kristin and husband Patrick; his grandchildren, Finn, Leif, Jacob, Abby, Neva, Boyd and Syndee; as well as his sisters, Janet Groom and Susan Altoft, along with an extensive local and distant community.
We plan to celebrate the life of Pete with family and community on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 1 p.m. We hope friends will join us by sharing stories about Pete during this service. The celebration of Pete’s life will take place on the beach down from his house. The path is at the corner of Ocean Ln. and Jolly Ln. There is also a shorter path with beach access one block away at the corner of Hatteras Ln and Jolly Ln. This will be followed by a physically distanced gathering with refreshments and a toast outside of Pete and Donna’s home at 39238 Ocean Ln., Avon, NC 27915. Please bring a chair if you would like to have a place to sit during the service on the beach. There is plenty of parking along the surface streets. We look forward to hearing your stories and sharing our love for Pete with all of you.
In lieu of flowers Pete’s family is requesting donations be made to the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, PO Box 639, Buxton, NC 27920, on the memo line please put “In Memory of Peter Groom”.
