May 18, 1974 – June 12, 2023
KILL DEVIL HILLS — William Irvin Grey, Jr., known as Billy, lived a life with no boundaries, humor and a mischievous grin on his face. On Monday, June 12, 2023, his bright light was dimmed after overcoming numerous health obstacles in his 49 years of life. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Shannon Roberts Grey, their daughter Grace Ann Kopf-Grey, his parents Willie and Reedy, his sisters Sandy and Tammy (Lee), his nieces Becca, Hayleigh (Bryce), Hannah, his nephews Bobby (Brittany) and Hayden and his five great nieces. His mother-in-law Cindy, sister-in-law Blaire (Michael) and his nephews Carter & Vann. He is preceded in death by his grandparents and two fathers-in-law.
Billy was born in Leesburg, Virginia on May 18, 1974. He graduated in 1992 from Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, Virginia. While his incredible sports journey was cut short, he will forever be remembered for his high and tight curve balls and the #19 on the back of his jersey.
For 47 years Billy lived in Loudoun County where his love and devotion for his family and community was evident. Billy wore several hats throughout the years with husband and Dad being his two favorites. Billy’s selfless life was filled, attending his daughter’s sporting events, having a cold one at his favorite places, hanging with his great friends, playing a game of poker, enjoying a good concert, placing a horse wager here and there and always finding a way to stir the pot. His choice of sports teams and music was often questioned by his friends however in true Billy Grey style he was always ready with a witty response. As a founding board member of Ability Fitness in Leesburg, Virginia, he helped to open a gym for individuals with physical and neurological disabilities.
There was never an adventure he was not willing to take. Two years ago, he moved to Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina where he and Shannon opened Sandbar Concierge. There his infectious charm shined bright, and he was adored by their customers. While his time on the sandbar was brief, the impact and friendships he made will be felt for years to come.
Those that loved and knew Billy will forever remember his perfect hair, those sincere blue eyes, and a smile that could light up the darkest days. May his family and friends find comfort in sharing stories, laughing until they cry, and ordering a vodka soda with a splash of cranberry, (NFL!) We truly were the lucky ones and Billy taught us all how to live #Greystrong.
