Lighthouse Vandalism Info Can be Submitted via Dare Crime Line; Restoration Efforts Underway

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has announced that anyone with information about the individual(s) responsible for etching the letters “SEF” into Cape Hatteras Lighthouse’s original bronze door can report it anonymously through the Dare Community Crime Line at https://darecommunitycrimeline.org/tips/

The National Seashore has also reached out to several bronze conservators within the National Park Service. They will provide treatment recommendations for restoring the door to its previous appearance.

“Thank you for spreading the word online about this unfortunate act of vandalism,” read a Cape Hatteras National Seashore post regarding the vandalism “We believe this to be an isolated incident, and look forward to the thousands of visitors this season who will continue the long tradition of respectfully enjoying the lighthouse and honoring those Hatteras Island residents who spent countless hours taking care of the lighthouse in the 1800s and 1900s.”
