NPS Announces Sea Turtle Nest Excavation Viewing Opportunities

Share post:

The National Park Service (NPS) announced that there are several excavation viewing opportunities this week on Hatteras Island.

An excavation will take place near Ramp 55 in Hatteras village on Thursday, August 2, at 10 a.m., and a second excavation is scheduled for Friday, August 3, at 10 a.m. at the Frisco Day Use Area, just south of Frisco’s town borders.

During an excavation, biologists dig up the recently hatched nest, count empty eggshells, and collect unhatched eggs for research. Live and dead hatchlings are occasionally found during these excavations. While the biologists perform their examination of the nest, a park ranger will present a program on sea turtles and share what the biologists have found.

Both excavations are free and open to the public, and all visitors are welcome to head to the beach to attend.
