Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in partnership with Outer Banks Forever and the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the lighting of the Bodie Island Lighthouse at 4 p.m. Nov. 12, 2022.

First lit on Oct. 1, 1872, the current Bodie Island Lighthouse replaced the previous lighthouse which was destroyed during the Civil War. Standing 164 feet tall, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of only 10 still-functioning lighthouses in the United States that features a first-order Fresnel lens.

A 150th anniversary celebration event, originally scheduled for Oct. 1, 2022, was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. The rescheduled Nov. 12 anniversary ceremony at the historic Bodie Island Light Station will feature remarks from Cape Hatteras National Seashore, United States Coast Guard, Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and descendants of lighthouse keepers. The one-hour event will conclude with a special lighting of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Free tickets to climb the Bodie Island Lighthouse on Nov. 12, 2022, require advanced reservations at: www.eventbrite.com/e/428734565627.
