Cape Point Campground opens for the 2024 season
The Cape Point Campground in Buxton opened for the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, per a recent announcement from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS).
The CHNS’ other seasonal campground – the Frisco Campground – opened on March 30, however, the Cape Point Campground’s opening was delayed due to excessive rainfall-related flooding in the area.
According to the National Weather Service, Cape Hatteras had 13.86 inches of total rain in March, which made it the wettest March on record. (The average rainfall for March at Cape Hatteras is 4.43 inches.)
“The Cape Point Campground will open loops D, E, and F, today at 3:00 p.m. [and] the restrooms on loop D and showers on loop F will also open today,” stated CHNS in a Saturday update. “Due to continued flooding of low-lying areas, all other campsites and facilities in Cape Point will remain closed until conditions improve.”
The CHNS’ Frisco and Cape Point Campgrounds remain open for the season until after the Thanksgiving holiday. The Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds are open year-round.
Reservations and campsite payments for all four CHNS campgrounds can be made online at recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.
