NCDOT awards contracts for road work in Dare and Hyde
North Carolina Department of Transportation Chief Operating Officer Jim Trogdon announced today that 10 contracts totaling $23.8 million have been awarded for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law.
The projects are located in Buncombe, Chowan, Cleveland, Dare, Gaston, Guilford, Hyde, Northampton, Swain, Tyrrell and Washington counties.
The bids received on all 10 projects advertised came in 9.6 percent, or about $2.5 million, below NCDOT estimates.
The project in Dare County includes raising the grade elevation of Highway12 from Old Coast Guard Station Road to two miles south through the area known as the “Canal Zone.” The work is necessary to improve drainage in the area.
A $1.6 million contract was awarded to RPC Contracting of Kitty Hawk. Work can begin as early as Jan. 31 and be completed by April 29.
The project in Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington counties includes resurfacing a section of N.C. 45 in Swan Quarter from N.C. 94 to Ferry Road; N.C. 94 from U.S. 264 to N.C. 45 and 11 sections of secondary roads throughout Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington counties totaling 11.8 miles. A $1 million project was awarded to Barnhill Construction Co. of Tarboro.
Work can begin as early as Jan. 31, with final completion no later than Sept. 23.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, every $1 million spent on transportation creates 30 jobs, and according to the construction industry, every dollar invested in transportation generates $6 in economic impact.
