Coastal Harvesters wants to know who is interested in produce delivery
Coastal Harvesters, Inc. (CHI) is looking for different avenues to bring locally grown vegetables and fruits to Hatteras Island tables. They want to hear from people who may be interested in receiving weekly deliveries of produce.
If there is support for this venture, farmers in Currituck and Hyde counties are willing to deliver directly from the fields. Farmers would advertise which crops would be harvested each week – from tender spring greens to savory squashes come fall. Customers would pick up a box of pre-ordered and prepaid produce at a designated site. All crops would be North Carolina grown, and some would be Certified Organic.
“People interested in participating in this sort of delivery program are invited to contact us. This is by no means a commitment,” said Joanne Throne, CHI president.
The program would run from early spring through late fall.
“The program would be beneficial to island residents unable to get to the Hatteras Island Farmers’ Market that CHI sponsors during the summer, and would also expand the availability of local produce into the spring and the fall,” Throne said.
Persons interested in participating in the program are asked to contact Throne at 252-996-0679 or info@coastalharvesters.org.
Coastal Harvesters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing healthy, local foods to the Outer Banks.
The group has a weekly farmer’s market during the summer on Hatteras and hopes to hold a farmer’s market on Ocracoke as well. Throne said the first market planned for Hatteras will be about the third week in June.
Also, Coastal Harvesters will have a community garden up and running this spring in Buxton. The garden is ready now, and people who are interested in a garden box can contact Suzanne Stark at the Fessenden center, 475-5650, for more information and for an application.
