N.C. 12 Temporarily Closed Between Rodanthe and Bonner Bridge; Oceanside flooding an issue for Sunday
Due to extreme ocean overwash, N.C. Highway 12 is temporarily closed in between Rodanthe and the Bonner Bridge. The NCDOT reports that crews are working to clear the sand and the roadway, but notes that travel may be disrupted over the next several high tide cycles.
The most likely times for ocean overwash will be around 9 a.m. this morning and 9:30 p.m. this evening during high tide.
North winds from the weekend storm will remain gusty today along the coast, however they will be weaker than yesterday. The main concern for Sunday is the very large surf off the Outer Banks, leading to a threat of significant beach erosion and continual ocean overwash in spots north of Cape Hatteras. Max wave heights up to 21 feet are forecast.
Debris and oceanside flooding along Highway 12 was also an issue in south Avon near Ocean View Drive and north Buxton.
It was reported at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning that police were turning vehicles around in south Avon due to the high water levels which were impassable, and which affected the highway from the intersection at Avon village to the southern town borders.
