N.C. Highway 12 Open on Both Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands
The NCDOT reported that N.C. Highway 12 is now open on Ocracoke Island between the Pony Pens and the Hatteras / Ocracoke Ferry Terminal. The highway also opened in between Rodanthe and the Bonner Bridge at around noon, and has remained open for the duration of the afternoon.
The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry route has resumed service with the following schedule for the rest of Wednesday:
• From Hatteras: 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and midnight
• From Ocracoke: 5:30 p.m, 7:30 p.m., and 10:30 p.m.
Assuming the road stays open tonight, the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route will resume its full published schedule on Thursday, March 8.
At low tide on Wednesday afternoon, standing water still remained an issue in Avon, although vehicles were able to get through the area. Travelers are urged to use caution and slow down through areas of standing saltwater to avoid damaging a vehicle.
