Abbreviated sound ferry schedule will continue through April 12
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division will continue to run its abbreviated schedule on its Ocracoke-Cedar Island route through Tuesday, April 12.
In addition, the Ferry Division will cancel runs to Swan Quarter on Wednesday and Thursday, March 30 and 31, and on Wednesday, April 6.
The Motor Vessel Silver Lake is currently at the shipyard undergoing extensive work during its dry dock period. The work involved major steel removal and replacement mandated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The plan is to have it finished and inspected on April 11 and return to service on the Pamlico Sound runs by Wednesday, April 13.
The MV Pamlico is also undergoing repair work for its dry dock period through April and into mid-May. Both boats, built in 1965, were brought in for this required USCG work during the off season to limit interruptions in runs and prepare for the increase in summer traffic.
During March, there has been no disruption to the Swan Quarter schedule. However, in order to meet traffic demands from Cedar Island for reservations that were made months in advance, Swan Quarter runs will be cancelled March 30-31 and April 6.
For those three days only, the Cedar Island-Ocracoke schedule will be:
Departing both Cedar Island and Ocracoke at 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The rest of the time until April 13, the Swan Quarter, Cedar Island, and Ocracoke schedules will consist of two departures from each side, to include:
Departing Swan Quarter at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Departing Ocracoke to Swan Quarter at 7 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
Departing Cedar Island at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Departing Ocracoke to Cedar Island at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
NCDOT awarded contracts to build two new sound-class vessels to serve this route to Orange Shipbuilding Co. The new ferries are currently under construction; one is expected to be delivered later this year and the other in 2012. Once these boats are delivered, service disruptions on these routes should be minimal.
