The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s 11th annual spring dance on Saturday, March 19, brought about 125 islanders and visitors to the Hatteras Village Civic Center to raise money for cancer patients.
This year’s theme was “Crusin’ to Calypso.” The surreal tropical decor gave everyone a feeling that the cold, windy winter was gone and spring had really arrived.
HICF board member Sydnee Slaughter was the chief decorator who transformed the center for the occasion. A giant sail, on loan from Nathan Snead from Hatteras Sailing Company, hung from the ceiling. The sail was accented by colored lights. Blue fabric on the walls with blue lights represented the water, and big umbrellas adorned some of the tables.
The menu was, as usual, extensive. Appetizers included smoked fish dip with crostinis, sesame pepper seared tuna, and spanakopita with tzedziki. The table was topped with a 31/2-foot tall tropical fruit tower that was almost to pretty to eat. The entrees included jerk chicken skewers with mango salsa, Cuban sliders, blackened shrimp, Greek tortellini salad, dirty rice, Conner’s famous barbecued beef brisket, and much more. Assorted cupcakes and mini-cheesecakes were displayed on the dessert table.
Most of the food and the ingredients were donated by various businesses, restaurants, and individuals and was prepared by the Dee Callahan and other HICF board members.
The band, Big Daddy Rhythm and the Heavyweights, kept the crowd dancing until midnight. The band members even enticed some of the partygoers on stage to shake the tambourine and sing. Dancers took to the floor for an array of music that included beach music, rock and roll, and funky ‘70s and ‘80s songs.
The foundation has not yet tallied the amount of money that was raised, but, in addition to ticket sales, a 50-50 raffle raised $800. The winner of the 50/50 was Beth Bailey of Hatteras who donated her winnings of $400 to the cancer foundation.
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation helps island cancer patients with medical bills and medications that are not covered by insurance and with travel to and from treatment centers.
“It takes a lot of fundraisers to fulfill the grant applications that are submitted to the HICF,” said board member Donna Barnett. “This means continually asking the community for support, and the outpouring of generosity from the community continues year after year. There are no words to describe the gratitude that the HICF feels to our community.”
