Cisco the Shark Hangs Around Hatteras Island

Cisco, an 8’ 7” immature white shark and one of the stars on the global shark tracker website http://www.ocearch.org, has been pinged – or tracked – several times in the past 24 hours in the Hatteras Island area. In fact, on April 14 at 10:38 a.m., Cisco made a virtual appearance adjacent to the town of Buxton, where he was pinged in what appeared to be the Pamlico Sound.

As of 4:41 p.m. on Friday, Cisco had once again ventured well offshore of Cape Hatteras, but this isn’t the first time that Cisco the shark has paid a visit to our islands.

From November 2016 through February 2017, Cisco had taken several cruises along the Hatteras and Ocracoke island coastlines, returning several times after a couple side trips to the coast of South Carolina and Georgia.

Cisco was named for Cisco Beach on Nantucket, and for Global Shark Tracker partner Cisco Brewery which helps support the organization’s research.

Cisco has traveled roughly 55 miles in the past 24 hours along, and more than 1,900 miles since first being tagged just a few months ago on October 7, 2016 in Nantucket Mass. Cisco currently weighs 362 lbs., and although he started in New England, it didn’t take him long to venture south away from Massachusetts, and to start hanging around the Carolinas’ much warmer beaches.
