Pamlico Sound ferries begin spring schedule
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division will begin its spring schedule Tuesday, April 19, at its Cedar Island-Ocracoke and Swan Quarter-Ocracoke routes.
The Motor Vessel Silver Lake was approved by the U.S. Coast Guard today to return to service on these runs, following extensive work at the state shipyard. Three sound-class ferries will now provide two daily departures at Swan Quarter and six at Cedar Island.
Beginning Tuesday, the schedule will be as follows:
Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route:
Departing Swan Quarter at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and
Departing Ocracoke at 6:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
Cedar Island-Ocracoke route:
Departing Cedar Island at 7 a.m., 10, 12:30 p.m., 3:30, 6 and 8:30, and
Departing Ocracoke at 7:30 a.m., 10, 1 p.m., 3:30, 6 and 8:30.
NCDOT awarded contracts to build two new sound-cClass vessels to serve this route to Orange Shipbuilding Co. The new ferries are currently under construction and are expected to be delivered later this year and in 2012.
