Coast Guard searching for missing mariner near Hatteras
The Coast Guard is searching for a man whose sailboat was discovered aground near Hatteras on Monday, May 1.
Missing is Richard Tomlinson, 82, of Clearwater, Florida. Tomlinson was reportedly sailing from Clearwater to Maine.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Rollin Fritch are currently searching for Tomlinson. The USCG and the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad responded to a call on 5:30 on May 1 that a 44 ft. sailboat was approaching the shore with no one aboard.
“Based on the logs, [the vessel] hit something early morning on the 28th of April,” said Bob Helle, assistant chief of the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad. “We can only surmise that he went overboard. The search is going on well south of us, and at Diamond Shoals.
If you have any information related to the search, please contact the USCG Command Center personnel at (757) 398-6390.
