Dare and Hyde start 2014 re-entry permit process
Dare and Hyde start 2014 re-entry permit process
Both Dare and Hyde counties are in the process of getting out information about this year’s procedures for re-entry after evacuations for tropical storms and hurricanes.
Hyde County Emergency Services Department is handling the 2014 Ocracoke re-entry permit process. The process is slightly different this year as persons with existing permits will not need to re-apply, but rather will be issued a new expiration date sticker for their permit.
You may renew your existing re-entry permit or apply for a new permit in person or by mail. The 2014 re-entry permit application and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Hyde County website and will be posted at the Post Office on Ocracoke.
To complete the process by mail, please submit the application along with a self-addressed and stamped envelope. You may complete the process in person at the Hyde County Emergency Services Department during normal business hours (located at 1223 Main St., Swan Quarter in the Public Safety Building).
Hyde County PIO, Sarah Johnson, will also be available at the Ocracoke Community Center during the following times to renew and issue permits:
Tuesday, June 17, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Wednesday, June 18, from 3:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 24, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Hyde County’s priorities for re-entry are:
1. Red – Emergency Personnel
2. Yellow – Infrastructure personnel
3. Green – Residents
4. White – Non-resident Property Owners
5. Non-residents/Tourists

In Dare County, Hatteras Island residents will need a driver’s license with a Hatteras Island physical address for re-entry. Check your driver’s license now and make sure it has your correct physical address.
A current tax bill — with valid identification matching the name on tax record — can also be used. Tax bills can be accessed online at www.darenc.com. Click “Tax Info” on the main navigation located at the top right of the homepage.
Hatteras non-resident property owners need a re-entry permit and should have already received one in the mail that is valid from 2014-2018 from the county’s Emergency Management Department.
If you have not received your re-entry permit, call Emergency Management at 252-475-5655.
Re-entry into Dare County and Hatteras Island will be staged according to the following priorities:
Priority One: Essential Personnel
Priority Two: Permanent Residents and Essential Personnel for Critical Businesses
Priority Three: Non-Resident Property Owners and Non-Resident Employees of Non-Critical Businesses
Priority Four: General Public and Visitors
