31 seniors receive diplomas at Cape Hatteras Secondary graduation….WITH SLIDE SHOW AND VIDEO

Thirty-one seniors at Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies  received their diplomas at graduation exercises on Saturday evening, June 11.

Friends and family joined the graduates in The William P. Dillon Memorial Gymnasium on a warm and sunny evening to celebrate the solemn yet festive occasion.

The Cape Hatteras Secondary School Graduation Band, led by Sean McCroskey, provided a prelude to the event and the traditional processional, “Pomp and Circumstance,” as the seniors filed into the gym.

After a presentation of colors by the U.S. Coast Guard, senior Carisa Renee Rausch led the Pledge of Allegiance and senior Miranda Paige Veal welcomed the attendees.

Principal Beth Haneman-Rooks recognized the class valedictorian, Gavin Hans Kehler. Assistant principal Annette O’Neal, introduced salutatorian Macy Storm Quidley, who spoke to his fellow graduates and others in the audience.

Haneman-Rooks presented the prestigious citizenship award to senior Carlos Andres Babilonia.

Teacher and class sponsor Tod Ray was the guest speaker for the evening.

Dare County Superintendent of Schools Sue F. Burgess declared the seniors graduates, and class president Elijah O’Neal Midgette presided over the turning of the tassels. Closing remarks were by senior Langston Christopher Cabral.

On the Friday morning before they graduated, the seniors traveled the short distance to Cape Hatteras Elementary School for the “Hurricane Walk of Fame,” during which the older students gave the youngsters an up close and personal look at what they can aspire to.

Dressed in their caps and gowns, the seniors paraded through the corridors of the Elementary School as the younger students and their teachers lined the hallways. There were plenty of high-fives, hugs, and congratulatory shouts as the seniors made their way through the hallways.

At a Community Celebration at the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, 17 members of Cape Hatteras Secondary’s Class of 2016 received scholarships totaling almost $137,000 for post-secondary education. Overall, 85 scholarships were presented to members in the Cape Hatteras Secondary Class of 2016.
