Two Democrats who want to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr will face each other in a primary runoff on Tuesday, June 22.
The two candidates in the runoff are Elaine Marshall, the four-term North Carolina secretary of state, and Cal Cunningham, a Lexington, N.C., attorney and former state senator who served as a military prosecutor in Iraq.
Marshall finished first in the six-candidate Democratic primary field on May 4. However, she fell short of the more than 40 percent of the vote she needed to avoid the runoff with Cunningham. She won 36 percent of the vote.
All registered Democrats can vote in Tuesday’s runoff. The polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
So far, the race has not elicited much excitement, though registered Democrats have probably gotten phone calls and mailings from various people who are supporting the candidates.
According to an Associated Press article over the weekend, Democratic operatives were expecting between 100,000 and 150,000 voters to participate in the runoff. That compares with 425,000 who voted on May 4.
The winner of the runoff will face first-term incumbent Burr, a conservative with a lot of financial support, in the Nov. 2 general election.
