The Dare County Sheriff’s Office today said that the body found on Saturday in Frisco is that of Lynn Jackenheimer of Ashland, Ohio, was has been missing since about July 4.
The body was taken to Greenville, N.C., for an autopsy, and the release from the sheriff’s office said the cause of death has not yet been determined.
Also this evening, the sheriff’s office issued a warrant for the arrest of Nathan Summerfield, 27, of Ashland for the murder of Jackenheimer.
Jackenheimer was last heard from about July 4 when she and her two children were vacationing in Salvo with her ex-boyfriend, Nate Summerfield.
Summerfield returned to Ohio on July 8, dropped the children off with their grandparents, and then disappeared. Police have been searching for him since last week.
According to published reports, Summerfield called his brother to tell him he had strangled Jackenheimer and disposed of her body. The brother called Ohio law enforcement authorities, who then contacted the Dare Sheriff’s Office.
Dare County deputies, with the help of other law enforcement agencies, conducted extensive searches last week in the Salvo area, about 25 miles north of where the body was found in Frisco.
Several members of Jackenheimer’s family and some friends came to Hatteras last week to participate in the search.
Earlier today, the sheriff’s office released the 911 tape of a phone call on Saturday from the person who discovered the body in the Village at Salt Creek subdivision, a secluded short street and cul-de-sac on the soundside of Hatteras Island.
Some information, such as the name of the caller, has been redacted and the voice has been altered.
On the tape, an unidentified man tells the 911 dispatcher that he thinks he has discovered a body in a bag in some tall grass in the subdivision, which is largely undeveloped.
