Highlights from the July 16 Board of Commissioners Meeting
The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a series of Outer Banks-related issues and achievements at their July 16 meeting in Manteo.
Topics which pertained to the island and / or the local community included the following.
Support for Multiuse Paths and Tram System in Hatteras Village
Following a presentation from Planning Director Donna Creef, Commissioners passed a resolution in support of a grant opportunity for pedestrian and tram facilities related to the passenger ferry service that NCDOT plans to operate between Hatteras Village and Ocracoke Island. If awarded, the grant funds would be used to construct multiuse paths along NC Highway 12 and Eagle Pass Road in Hatteras Village and also to implement a tram system similar to what is planned for Ocracoke Village. No local matching funds are required.
Pre-Event Contract for Disaster Debris Recovery
Upon recommendation from the selection committee that reviewed and evaluated four disaster debris management proposals, Commissioners approved Southern Disaster Recovery as the primary contractor and Crowder Gulf as the secondary contractor. The recommendation was based on the “Best Value” selection criteria outlined by FEMA and adheres to procurement laws that went into effect July 1.
Agreement for Professional Services Associated with the New Dredge
Commissioners approved an agreement with APTIM Coastal Planning and Engineering of North Carolina for environmental and engineering services associated with obtaining the permits that will be needed for the new dredge that is planned for Dare County. The North Carolina Legislature recently approved providing funds for a public/private partnership for a dredge capable of maintaining shallow draft navigation channels.
Certificates of Appreciation Presented to Joe & Ann Lamb and John’s Drive-In
On behalf of the Board, Chairman Bob Woodard presented certificates of appreciation to two local businesses for their service and dedication to the Outer Banks.
Joe and Ann Lamb were recognized as the visionary founders of Joe Lamb, Jr. and Associates which has provided an exemplary level of service to their clients, employees and the community for over 50 years.
John Tice, Jr., Mona and Tina of John’s Drive-In were saluted for their family business that was started by their parents over 40 years ago and has become a landmark Outer Banks institution serving outstanding food and cherished memories for countless families.
