Flash Flood Warning Issued for Hatteras Island
A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for the Outer Banks from Hatteras village to Southern Shores as a heavy band of rain and embedded thunderstorms moves over the Outer Banks for the next couple of hours. As of 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, the Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 6 p.m.
Per the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office, due to the heavy rains that have already fallen over the past several days, it may not take long for area roads to begin flooding. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution when travelling along N.C. Highway 12 and other areas of the Outer Banks. As of Tuesday afternoon, N.C. Highway 12 was still passable throughout Hatteras Island.
An additional 3 to 6 inches of rain across a large portion of eastern NC through Wednesday is also expected, leading to flash flooding concerns that may linger through Wednesday night. In addition to the heavy rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms are expected.
