Island Residents Urged to Conserve Water
Due to the power outage, the Dare County Water Department has issued a water conservation alert for Hatteras Island customers. Public Cooling and Charging Station Available at Ocracoke VFD
The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department will be made available to the public as a cooling and charging station starting Friday, July 28, 2017, at 8:00 AM. Medical personnel will be onsite to help treat heat related injuries.
Due to current power restrictions, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Frisco Campground is closed through Friday.
Due to the Ocracoke non-resident mandatory evacuation issued by Hyde County because of island-wide power outage, the Ocracoke Campground will be closed until the County’s evacuation order is lifted.
The Ocracoke Visitor Center and ORV Permit Office will remain open unless excessive heat necessitates a closure. ORV permits will be sold on a cash-only basis until power is restored.
All other seashore facilities including the Cape Point Campground, Oregon Inlet Campground, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Hatteras Island ORV Permit Office, Bodie Island ORV Permit Office, etc remain open.

Update from Hyde County
Tideland Electric Membership Corporation’s attempt to operate the Ocracoke generator earlier today was unsuccessful and resulted in damage that renders it inoperable.
Three mobile generators will arrive on the island Friday to operate the three island circuits starting tomorrow evening. With strict conservation, Tideland hopes to avoid rotating outages once generator power is in place.
Per Tideland, this will completely depend upon everyone on the island doing their part. Please make sure all large breakers and non-essential appliances/electronics/etc. are turned off and/or unplugged.
Tideland EMC will attempt to restore limited power to Ocracoke island with a generator. Ocracoke will operate under a schedule of rotating blackouts for a period of time yet to be determined. For that to be successful, all island residents & visitors need to shut off non-essential breakers now and observe strict conservation during each generator run. Tideland EMC recommends shutting off water heaters and HVAC systems.
Again, it is of critical importance for all Ocracoke residents and visitors to observe the conservation request issued by Tideland EMC. If the current population of Ocracoke does not comply, the rotating schedule could be interrupted and attempts to alleviate the stress of the outage could be suspended. We are very hopeful that the outage will be addressed expeditiously but everyone needs to be prepared for an extended outage.
