Hurricane debris removal still
underway on Hatteras, Ocracoke
Debris removal for the unincorporated areas of Dare County continues. Crews have completed pick-ups in Wanchese, Skyco, Avon, and Hatteras village. Residents in these areas are asked to not put anything else on the roadside.
Storm debris pickup will continue for the areas of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Buxton, Frisco, northern portions of Roanoke Island (outside the Town of Manteo), Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Martins Point, and Colington (including inside the gate).
Please be aware that only one pass will be made through each of the remaining neighborhoods so all debris should be placed in four separate piles on the side of the road. There is no set schedule for when crews will be in a particular area of the county. The process is expected to take additional time and customers are asked for patience.
For the areas where debris removal has not yet been completed — Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Buxton, Frisco, northern portions of Roanoke Island (outside the Town of Manteo), Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Martins Point, and Colington (including inside the gate) — debris should be placed in four separate piles on the side of road:
1. Vegetative Debris (limbs, leaves, branches, sea grass, etc.)
2. Construction and Demolition Materials (building materials, concrete, shingles, etc.)
3. Metal
4. Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics (oil, bleach, televisions, computers, etc.)
Large items such as cars, boats, trailers, and campers will not be accepted and must be disposed of by the owner.
Debris taken to the Dare County Transfer Station in Manns Harbor or the Buxton Transfer Station will be charged the regular rate of $65/ton. (The first 500 pounds for residential customers is free with the remaining weight prorated at $65/ton.)

On Ocracoke, Solid Waste Superintendent James Blount is overseeing the chipping of storm debris from Hurricane Arthur.
Blount said last week that the chipping crew was working the lighthouse area. After completion of the roads around the lighthouse, they will start at Ride the Wind and work the neighborhoods on that side of Highway 12 moving towards the convenience site. This should include the bank area, behind the variety store, etc.
Soon the crew will start at Ocracoke Chile Care and go down Middle Road to Jackson Dunes. They will work the roads on the soundside as they move from Jackson Dunes to Oyster Creek, servicing the Sunset Drive area on their way back to the center of the village.
Please keep in mind that chipping is limited to debris and limbs less than 6 inches in diameter. Anything larger than 6 inches across should be separated and hauled to the Ocracoke solid waste site.
Blount estimates it will take a couple more weeks of chipping until the entire island has been serviced.
