Canadian visitor drowns off Salvo
A 51-year old French Canadian drowned off Salvo Monday, July 28, around 1:30 p.m.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore acting chief ranger Ben McKay reported that the man was snorkeling 30 yards offshore. He waved for help but was next seen face-down.
Two Good Samaritans brought the man to shore. CPR was started quickly by bystanders, but the man had already turned blue around the mouth, reports McKay.
CPR was continued by Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue and Dare County Emergency Medical Services responders.
The victim was transported from the beach around Rampart Street to Ramp 23, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore chief ranger Paul Stevens is currently in Leavenworth, Wash., where he is serving as liaison for the incident commander for the active wildfires burning in Washington state.
